Norkoping Visualization Center and Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization have developed remarkable Virtual Autopsy Table that features touch-screen autopsy without any cutting work with body required.

Investigated body is scanned with CT or MRI scanners. After scanning the body, collected data are manipulated by software that can filter 3D images based on tissue density, luminance, and other criteria.

The Virtual Autopsy Table can also be used in public institutions for educational purposes such as museums, Science and Technology centers.

Apart from avoiding cutting in the body the doctors can see things that are difficult to discover in a conventional autopsy. Furthermore, the technique opens up for new op­portunities in countries where autopsies are not accepted due to cultural reasons.

This invention also can be used in treatment of livinig patients. It becomes possible, for example, to remove clothing, skin or blood vessels with this instrument so it can be used for various body examinations.

The installation is financed within the framework of the Visualization program and developed by Norrköping Vi­sualization Center in cooperation with CMIV (Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization).
